All About Pittsburgh Model Janea Barlow

By Olivia Miller

Models have the unique ability to take a designer’s piece and bring it to life. But what is the true job of a model? To Pittsburgh-based model Janea Barlow, it’s much more than just strutting down the runway.

Barlow’s first introduction to modeling was in high school when her mother found a modeling class at a local church that taught posing and walking. This sparked her interest in building a career as a model which led her to seek out opportunities like Pittsburgh Fashion Week.

To put it simply, Barlow believes the job of a model is “to inspire.” She believes that no matter the nature of the project, a model’s mission is to show others that they can be in the same place and achieve the same things.

In her career as a model, she hopes to achieve just that. Her most important career goal is to “not only make a mark on younger girls but also start a movement.” She wants to encourage young girls and boys interested in modeling “that if you have the thrive and the drive, you can do it.”

She acknowledges the lack of modeling opportunities in Pittsburgh and hopes to create more by establishing a modeling school or agency in the future.

By bringing more modeling opportunities to the city, Barlow hopes to be an agent of change in enhancing the Pittsburgh fashion scene, which, in her opinion, is “overlooked.” She believes that the city is full of talent; all it needs is “the right opportunity to have the right eyes on us,” to turn the city into that of New York City or Paris. However, Barlow clarifies that Pittsburgh’s goal is not to be New York City. Instead, Pittsburgh needs to “pave its own lane” to create a fashion scene as unique as the city itself.

Cutting Locks and Building Legacy at Cardamone's Salon

By Olivia Miller

It can be argued that Pittsburgh has cultivated some of the most historic businesses and iconic brands in the country. But few have cracked the code to longevity quite like Cardamone’s Salon.

Cardamone’s Salon has been a Pittsburgh staple for the last 44 years. Owner Joe Cardamone’s interest in shaping hair and “making people look good and feel better” initially inspired him to attend beauty school before opening the salon in 1978. It started as a small, 3 chair salon but has expanded into a two-story salon not only offering premier hair cuts for all types of hair, but also unique services such as manicures, waxing, and facials.

Cardamone credits the salon’s strong relationships with their clients with the success of the business. The salon’s long-standing location at 300 Forbes Avenue is close to office buildings, universities, and hotels, which has allowed Cardamone's to build a diverse and loyal client base of tourists and CEOs alike. Cardamone proudly says that it is “the best location in Pittsburgh.”

As loyal as Cardamone’s customers are to the salon, Cardamone’s is just as devoted to creating a welcoming and friendly environment for them. Customers can expect to feel right at home while they get their hair cut or colored by skilled stylists who know their first names.

Along with their excellent customer service, Cardamone’s longevity is owed to the emphasis the salon puts on education. Unique to Cardamone’s, training programs for new stylists are provided as well as continued education programs to “keep their skills sharp.”

To book an appointment with one of the talented stylists at Cardamone’s, visit their location at 300 Forbes Avenue or give them a call at (412)-281-2645. You can also visit their website at cardamonessalon.net for a complete list of their offerings.

To see examples of their work, visit their Facebook page, @cardamonessalon, or their Instagram page, @cardamones_salon

Fashionable Finds at 306 Forbes

By Olivia Miller

In a world ruled by Amazon and Walmart, it seems like the in-store, personal shopping experience is a lost art. Womens’ boutique 306 Forbes is fighting to bring it back.

Originally opened in October 2019 by Lisa Wolfson, the shop features pieces for women of all ages that are just as versatile and timeless as they are stylish. Wolfson boasts that her in-store Spanx fittings are one of the most unique and convenient aspects of the boutique.

Her favorite part about her location downtown is interacting with her clientele. Whether they are regular customers, college students and their parents, or men shopping for their significant others, Wolfson likes having conversations with her customers to get to know them.

When customers walk into 306 Forbes and behold its chandeliers and floral wallpaper, Wolfson wants them to feel “welcomed and inspired.” She wants the pieces on the colorfully curated racks to encourage women to show off their personalities and their own personal styles in their clothing.

Supporting small businesses is something Wolfson keeps very close to her heart. She carries candles made by local small businesses and would like to expand her line of local offerings in the future. She not only encourages supporting her small business, but also other downtown small businesses since the money “goes right into the local economy.”

Like many small businesses around the country, the pandemic proved to be challenging for 306 Forbes, especially with discontinued items and supply chain issues. However, 306 Forbes’ establishment of their website and online store in 2021 significantly helped to remedy the pandemic’s effects.

To browse 306 Forbes’ unique assortment of womenswear, you can visit their location on 306 Forbes Avenue or browse their selection online at 306forbesboutique.com. You can also call them at (412)-338-2222 and check out their Instagram at @306forbesboutique.

Overall, Wolfson wants all customers to “walk out and feel beautiful.”

Q&A with Alexandra Mayr-Gracik, CEO and Head Designer of Sabika Jewelry

1. How do you approach creating a design?

It’s important to me that the design comes from an authentic place. It has to marry form and function equally.

2. When thinking about the Sabika brand, how is that maintained across differing styles? How do you design for different people?

I like imagining different people in my designs while I develop them. As I choose colors and shapes, I think about what it will look like on different skin tones, hair colors, eye colors and styles.

3. What do you feel is the most important part of the design process?

Price point. I could design the most beautiful elaborate piece, but if my pricing is off, no one will purchase it. It is a matter of keeping the value balanced and affordable.

4. Explain how the person or people wearing the design influences your process?

I have a photographic memory and love observing street style around me. It is all about observing natural trends and how people live in your designs.

5. Can you explain how trends impact the styles you design?

Sabika has always prided itself on being trend aware but not trendy. Trends are important in terms of colors and materials, but it is always my goal to design pieces that transcend trends and are wearable for many seasons to come.

6. What do you think has given longevity to the Sabika brand for over 20 years?

Our mission. My mom Karin created such a strong foundation in her mission to be a company by women for everyone and to empower individuals to find beauty, joy and opportunity through our jewelry. Her story resonates as much today as it did then.

7. What’s it like being a longstanding local brand in Pittsburgh?

I love Pittsburgh. It has been an unexpected city to grow a fashion brand, but we have felt the love and support over the years and try to show our appreciation by giving back to the community wherever we can.

8. What new designs are you currently working on that you are most excited about?

I found some new and unexpected materials and components that we are working with in our upcoming collections, including Spring 2023. I cannot wait to share them with everyone!

9. What’s your advice for designers who are just getting started?

Start with what you have. I have always taken the approach to make lemonade out of lemons and use whatever materials I have access to. Limitations can actually be a fertile soil for even more creativity. And know that this is a big world, keep doing what you love, someone out there will love it too.

Karen Brown founded One Haute Dog 7 years ago because she wanted to provide a place with cute options for clothes, toys, and accessories for pet lovers, and she realized there was an untapped market for dog boutiques. Bringing her vision to life, she created a shop that makes going to the mall fun for both people and pets!

Today, her nephew, Jay Wiktorzewski, carries on her legacy by helping provide our furry friends with fabulous ‘fits. Of course, cats can get in on the fun too! They offer cat toys that are sure to be a good time, like a “Kitty Klaw” or “Pawdka”— drinks we can sip, but for kitties, come with just (cat) nip.

One Haute Dog is a truly unique experience for the Pittsburgh community and beyond. Be sure to stop in and build your pet’s dream wardrobe. Josh Gibson Foundation: Making History Today

By Payton Ferris

The Josh Gibson Foundation works to cherish the legacy of baseball player Josh Gibson by utilizing his history today to support underrepresented players who love the game.

As only the second Negro League player to be inducted in the baseball hall of fame, Josh Gibson left a mark not only on Pittsburgh sports but on the history of baseball. In speaking with Sean Gibson, Executive Director of the Foundation & great-grandson of Josh Gibson, he shared how continuing his family legacy gives him the chance to educate people and perhaps give them someone to relate to with the story of Josh Gibson. With the segregation that Josh Gibson endured during his career, Sean works to show others how his great grandfather had to “endure a lot to play a simple game of baseball.”

Since the foundation’s establishment in 1994, the Gibson family and organization staff have worked to educate others about Josh Gibson’s impact on Pittsburgh and baseball. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Gibson’s induction into the hall of fame, the foundation has had numerous events during August to praise his legacy. This includes events such as sharing Gibson’s Hall of Fame plaque and bringing it to PNC Park, as well as giving Josh Gibson’s wife, Helen Mason, a headstone for a final proper resting place.

One of the biggest initiatives that the foundation currently supports is the Josh Gibson Baseball Academy which allows people from the inner city to have access to a baseball field. The foundation recently announced a new project to go along with the Baseball Academy: the construction of an indoor facility and Miracle Field to ensure that everyone is given the space and opportunity to play baseball.

A Miracle Field is a rubber field that would allow those with disabilities to play baseball in a safe environment. With this project, the foundation wanted to “change dynamics and offer programming” that showcases how everyone should have access to a nice facility to share their love of the game. Although this is just the beginning of the twelve-million-dollar project, this unique facility has the opportunity to be a community center that elevates job opportunities and tourism within Pittsburgh.

Sean explained how rewarding he finds it to share and carry out this legacy of his family for generations to come. His grandfather, Josh Gibson Jr. (son of Josh Gibson), always told him that the “one thing you have is your name” and Sean works every day to honor his name by making Pittsburgh a welcoming place for underrepresented players. Despite his sudden death in 1947, Josh Gibson’s baseball career lives on as a legendary contribution to the game and to the community of players everywhere.
